I’ll put it out there that I’m a massive fan of Carenado models. Mostly because they’re visually exquisite, but also because they aren’t overly complicated. I know they’re not ‘study level’ but that’s totally fine by me! The Shrike is another of those unusual aircraft in its size and shape, but also it’s history. Bob Hoover flew some amazing aerobatics in it, whilst wearing a suit, and shutting down engines just for fun! YouTube.
Anyway, installation is easy. The model, as mentioned above, is stunning (note, the Bob Hoover livery doesn’t not come with it). Though I would say that the vc is a little ‘brown’ for my liking. Startup is relatively easy, though make sure the fuel shutoff switches (red guarded switches on the overhead) are not in the off position. As with most aircraft with guarded switches, usually when you shut the red guard, the switch goes back to the operational setting. In this, it doesn’t!
Flying is easy and aerobatics are simple to execute. Perhaps a little too easy – you can back-stick it and it doesn’t g stall. I’ve not flown the real thing, but I don’t get the sense that it’s Bernoulli who is keeping it airborne! That aside, you can do cool things with it and it’s very forgiving. Add a Flight1 GTN to the mix and you’ve got a versatile GA aircraft that will get you places quickly, have a lot of fun on the way, and plan you next outing before you’ve finished the current one!
Overall, I’m glad I got the Shrike. Especially having seen Bob Hoover’s aerobatics! The model is excellent but the vc isn’t the prettiest. It’s the Shrike’s versatility that really wins out as well as just being good fun!
